Money versus Arts, 2009

These interviews were done from August through November every ten days in Sligo Leitrim. Both the interviewers, and the persons interviewed are resident in this area. Because of the extraordinary economic and financial conditions of Ireland at this time, the concerns and feelings of adults with regard to the economy were explored in contrast to their cultural life, as related to the arts. The arts are described in Ireland specifically, for example as literature, music, theatre, visual arts, dance, cinema, mixed media, architecture, and opera. Understanding, appreciation, or practice of the arts were the basis for accounts given, although at times the interviews encompassed wider cultural aspects of life in this corner of the island. The episodes are sequential, and a number of persons feature consistently.
